#KeepCalmBritHop – Try Some Hand Stitching! [Click on this title to see whole post with photos]

** Drawing closed – winner has been chosen!

Hi, this is Pam and Rebecca from Sew Hot. Welcome to Sew Hot’s Blog as part of the #KeepCalmBritHop!

Along with being the proprietors of Sew Hot, we are both avid sewists, and usually have at least several projects each that we are working on at any given time. Currently Pam is working on the Susan Ache Cross Stitch Sampler, and a couple of Laura Heine Fabric Collages. Rebecca is working on the beautiful Christmas Figs Sampler quilt by Fig Tree Quilts. We are always happy to help with any projects you may be working on, so please feel free to email us if you ever have any questions!

Most of you know Sew Hot as a great place to find a huge variety of quilting fabrics, battings, threads, and notions. We make Bag Makers happy, too, with our large selection of faux leathers, sparkle vinyl, Emmaline Hardware, foam stabilisers, and interfacing.

But did you know that we also carry Sashiko and Stitchery products? Often, at the end of a busy day behind the sewing machine, we want to just curl up in front of the telly, watch our favourite shows, and do a little hand stitching to relax. Sew Hot also has plenty of options to meet that need, too!

Sashiko is a form of decorative reinforcement stitching (or functional embroidery) from Japan that started out of practical need during the Edo era (1615-1868). Traditionally used to reinforce points of wear or to repair worn places or tears with patches, making the piece ultimately stronger and warmer, this running stitch technique is often used for purely decorative purposes in quilting and embroidery. Sashiko is fun, easy, and produces beautiful results! You can incorporate your finished Sashiko pieces into cushions, clothing, bags, quilts, and many other things. We carry many different pre-printed Sashiko fabrics, and lots of Sashiko threads for you to try!

Stitchery includes many techniques, such as embroidery, crewel, needlepoint, and cross stitch. Sew Hot has made a “point” of carrying all of Lori Holt’s popular cross stitch patterns for you to try! We also have Lori’s cross stitch fabric, and many colours of Aurifloss, so you can get all your supplies in one shopping trip. Don’t want to bother counting small squares? Try one of our fun embroidery kits for your evening down-time.

Big Stitch Quilting is also very popular to do in your lap. Big Stitch Quilting uses a larger needle and a much larger thread. It creates stitches that are larger and more easily seen. Big stitch quilting is a wonderful way for traditional hand quilters to really show off their work with colorful thread, and it adds another layer of texture to the finished quilt. We have an excellent selection of Aurifil 12wt threads that many quilters love to use!

As a part of the #KeepCalmBritHop, we’re giving away an Aurifloss Merry Stitchmas Thread Collection! Just answer “What would you stitch with this collection?” in the below comments to enter. We will draw the winner on Friday April 17!

ALSO!! Just for our Blog readers, if you would like to try your hand at Sashiko, you can use code  blogsashiko  on your order for 15% off all Sashiko products. This code is good until 30 April 2020.

I’d try some modern crazy patchwork – a sampler of stitch.

    1. Dawn Jeffs says:

These would be fabulous to hand quilt my current bargelo Christmas Tree wall hanging quilt! Classic christmas colours, I might even embroider some baubles on the tree. 😀

  2. Sue Bone says:

I would try one of the free charts on the Aurifil website such as little Quaker Christmas. https://www.aurifil.com/cross-stitch-patterns

    1. Polly says:

A scrappy table runner made out of star blocks of various sizes and big stitch quilting in all the colours!

  3. Sandra Anderson says:

I would stitch a Christmas tree, covered in lovely bright coloured baubles and presents underneath.

  4. Nikki Beresford says:

I’d like to try free stitching something small to hang in my hallway. I’ve always followed a pattern/chart before but I would love to throw caution to the wind and freehand stitch a quilt block or two.

  5. birgit moehrer-whiteley says:

I would quilt my improv flowers quilt with these

  6. Kathy E. says:

I’ve wanted to make a whole set of patchwork Christmas stockings for my family. I would use the Aurifloss to make beautiful, original hand-stitching on each one!
