Product Description

Sew Hot Academy Presents A Weekend with Jen Kingwell Friday 9 Aug – Sun 11 Aug

Join Jen Kingwell for her fantastic Puzzle Piecing Workshop where you can learn to create your own jigsaw style of quilt. Jen first became known for this look with her quilt Green Tea & Sweet Beans and from it’s success went on to create other quilts with this similar style.

These quilts are like the traditional sampler, but their construction method tricks the eye to create a traditional quilt with a modern twist!

Do you have a collection of blocks made that never made it into a quilt? Work with these Orphan Blocks and create a whole new design of your own! Don’t have any Orphan Blocks? Feel free to select blocks from Jen’s Template Tempter range or any of her other patterns (ie: Long Time Gone, Bakers Dozen, Delilah, Golden Days, Green Tea and Sweet Beans, Marshal etc) to add to your quilt. Working on grid paper, you will learn the secrets to creating your own masterpiece.

In this two-day workshop, Jen will cover the following topics:

  • Selecting fabrics
  • General hand piecing
  • Making templates
  • Using acrylic templates
  • Designing filler blocks
  • Getting the right quilt layout
  • Needleturn applique
  • Hand quilting
  • Binding and other finishes
  •  Jen teaches hand skills but if you wish to machine piece bring your sewing machine and rotary cutting equipment. Machines will be available for an additional cost.

LOCATION – Workshop and Lodging will be at the lovely Preston Marriott Hotel, Garstang Road, Broughton, Preston PR3 5JB.    https://www.marriott.co.uk/hotels/travel/blkbp-preston-marriott-hotel/   Originally a Victorian manor house, the hotel provides the perfect base for our workshop travellers. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR: Jen Kingwell has been lucky in her life to have had two wonderful careers. Her first love was midwifery and she felt honoured to be included in life’s most precious every day miracle. She doesn’t know where her love of fabrics came from, her mother was not a sewer but she does know she has always been fascinated by colour and pattern. Like many, she tried different crafts and stumbled into quilting over 30 years ago and there she has remained. An interest became an obsession which then became her career, including teaching and designing.

Jen describes herself as a traditional quilter with a modern twist. She loves scrappy quilts and the more fabrics she can use in a single project the happier she is. In her perfect world, she would hand stitch everything; but with today’s busy lifestyle, she does machine piece as well. Hand appliqué and quilting are among her favourite pastimes. Jen designed her first fabric range for Moda called “Gardenvale” in April 2015 and her first book Quilt Lovely was released soon after. Jen has gone on to have many successful ranges for Moda, and her pattern range continues to sell strongly in the market.

Please note that there are no refunds for class bookings unless we can fill your reserved spot. For more information about our classes, refer to our Class Policies or contact us at 0330 111 3690.
