Henrik Mueller designed the “Swiss Machine Block” a number of years ago and always wanted to make a proper quilt of it. With the release of his very first Aurifil thread collection called “PROUD & ABOUT”, and his newly designed “Minor Thread Block” (the perfect companion block to the “Swiss Machine Block”), Henrik created the “Thread Against The Machine Quilt Pattern”. This fresh, modern quilt pattern is a compilation of modern sewing machines accompanied by a border of small spools of Aurifil thread in the colors of the “PROUD & ABOUT” collection.
This quilt really celebrates the modern quilter by highlighting a modern sewing machine and some really good thread, the best thread in our opinion!
Along with this exciting release, Henrik will be holding a Sew Along to make this fun quilt! The Sew Along starts May 30.
The “Thread Against the Machine” Quilt Kit contains an assortment of fabrics you will need to complete the 80 inch square version (16 machines) of the quilt.
Included in this Kit is:
- 18 Fat Quarters of Kona Solids for the machines and threads
- Half Metre of Kona Silver for machines
- 2 yards of Kona Snow for machines and thread
- Four 10″ x 10″ squares of assorted fabrics with sewing icons on them (pins, scissors, needles, threads, pincushions, etc for the machine displays)
NOTE 1 – THIS KIT DOES NOT INCLUDE FABRIC FOR QUILT BACKGROUND, BINDING, OR BACK. You will need an additional 5 yards of dark gray-ish fabric for the quilt top background. We have identified some fabrics that you might like to use, and they are listed here (you will need to purchase your 5 yards separately – on our website you will need to enter 4.6 metres – in order to complete your quilt top).
Suggested fabrics for quilt background (dark fabric, non directional texture print). Some of these fabrics may have limited stock:
- Astra Woven Texture Hubble
- Sparkler Gray
- Thatched Stone
- Architextures Black
- Thatched Chalkboard Scribbles
- Thatched Dark Pewter
- Tilda Chambray Grey
- Mix Blender Texture Piano
- Pin Drop Riley Gray
- Manchester Yarn Dyed Metallic Onyx
- Manchester Yarn Dyed Pepper
- Grunge Ash

Note 2: In order to make this quilt you need to purchase the Swiss Machine Block from Henrik’s Etsy Shop. The “Minor Thread Block” will be emailed to you when you sign up for the Sew Along. You can sign up for the Sew Along on Henrik’s webpage.
The 29th of May 2022 is the definitive deadline to sign up. After that you will no longer get the MINOR THREAD BLOCK pattern and the sew along instructions for free. The block will then only be available for sale afterwards.
The “Swiss Machine Block” pattern features a modern day Bernina sewing machine.
It includes written instructions on how to assemble the blocks and a foundation paper piecing pattern for the 12″ and the 16″ square version of this block. (The Sew Along Quilt will use the 16″ square version).
The difficulty level is “Intermediate” meaning it requires prior knowledge of FPP. The process of how to sew FPP is not included in this pattern. There are plenty of YouTube Tutorials on that. This pattern is a digital download. In order to make the pattern you need a program that can open PDF files and a printer.
