Tyvek is unbelievably fun to work with! It’s what Airmail bags are made of. Made of synthetic nylon type fibres you can really have a blast with this!! Glue it, paint it, crunch it…heat it up however gently or a lot depending on the effect you want or don’t heat it at all. Have a blast making your own embellishments. You can sew things on to it.
You can paint it with Jacquard paints from Lumiere to Pearl Ex and then heat set it and watch it bubble. You can stain it, crunchy it with other kinds of paints and make book covers, masks…oh my gosh the list grows by the minute!! Sew the beautiful pieces you create onto a wall hanging or bag pocket or the whole bag. Make your own fabulous unique background to a COLLAGE!! Give anything you want a special zing with your own personal flair!
Tyvek has a very lightweight paper-like feel. It is super strong and practically indestructible. Tyvek is machine washable and lay flat to dry.
Can it be sewn?
Of course! Tyvek can be needled easily by machine, but you will probably need to use a thimble when sewing by hand as the material can become quite thick and dense in places once it’s been heated which makes it a little difficult to get a hand needle through.
How do you use it?
For tyvek to contort you need to heat it. You can use a hot air gun (keep your fingers out of the way because it gets really hot) or you can iron it. It only takes a short burst of heat to see results, so begin gently.
